Volunteering at St Benedict's Hospice

Our hospice relies heavily on the dedicated army of volunteers who proudly give up their own time to support us in so many ways across a range of our services. If you could spare some time each week to help St Benedict's Hospice, we'd love to hear from you. There are opportunities in a range of roles and by volunteering with us you can learn new skills, make new friends, help support our community and have fun!

Gardening Volunteers

We are looking for both social and therapeutic horticulture volunteers and also gardening volunteers to support the exciting new development of our gardens and social and therapeutic programmes here at St Benedict’s Hospice. 

Social and therapeutic horticulture uses plants, gardening and associated activities to support the physical, social and psychological health and well-being of our patients, carers, staff, volunteers and the wider community.

Hospice In-patient Volunteers
We are looking for volunteers to helps serve meals and drinks to patients on the in-patient unit.   We have 4 shifts per day (Breakfast, lunchtime, afternoon and evening), seven days per week.  If you could spare a few hours each week then please contact:  Julie Dagg, Specialist Palliative Care Services Co-ordinator Tel: 0191 5128433 or e-mail:  julie.dagg@nhs.net

Retail - Retail Assistants (Click HERE for our retail page)

Our seven retail units are based all across the region are in need of volunteers in every location 7 days a week. We are looking for volunteers to help with sorting donations, processing stock, tagging items as well as till operators and shop floor assistants. This is an excellent opportunity for someone wishing to gain real experience of working in retail. All training will be given and shifts can be very flexible.

Transport - Volunteer Drivers

Our transport service is a key part of the Charity's provision and operates 5 days each week. Each journey is customised to meet the needs of individual patients and provided by our team of volunteer drivers whose schedule is agreed with our Transport Co-ordinator.  If you can offer at least a half day each week, preferably more, and enjoy good health with a reasonable level of fitness, it means we can provide more patients with the services they need and which we know they value. In order to comply with our vehicle and passenger insurance arrangements, we can only consider people who have a clean driving licence with D or D1 entitlement to drive minibuses and are aged between 25 and 75 years of age. We also need people to undergo a DBS clearance prior to joining the team.

St Benedict's Hospice Cafe and Gift Shop

Our on-site cafe and gift shop play a pivotal role in serving our hospice. Would you like to gain key customer service skills? Would you enjoy chatting and getting to know our staff and all of our regular customers? All training is provided and this is an excellent opportunity for you to prove your capabilty in a retail enviroment. We offer volunteer shift Monday - Saturday, 10am - 4pm.

Due to Covid Restrictions we are currently unable to have volunteers in the hospice, and will update this page as soon as we are able to welcome you back.

Events

St Benedict's Hospice relies on income generated from a range of events such as the Great North Run, The Sunflower Ball, Sunderland Running Festival, The Sunflower Summer Fayre, Dedication Tree and much more to help us continue to deliver the level of care we offer here.
